With a lifetime of experience in teaching, research and design, Dr. Jacob Apkarian is still as closely linked to the inspirational engineering development at Quanser as he ever was. Back in 1989, Jacob started the business to provide exciting challenges for undergraduate students of feedback control, and provide researchers with effective tools and techniques to advance developments in the field. Today, he continues to instill his enthusiasm for innovation in all of Quanser’s engineers, clients and partners.

Jacob’s driving force has always been to provide clients with innovative solutions that directly impact their progress. This allows our clients to free up valuable time and resources and focus on their particular area of expertise. The product range is continuously being refined and updated. We also have a continuous process of upgrading existing products. This is very clear to appreciate with our range of interbody fusion devices, which are now all available sterile packed. Sterile packed spinal products are very much the future and offers major benefits regarding product integrity and traceability.

LUMBAR AND CERVICAL SPINES, DEFORMITY AND TUMOUR AND TRAUMA INDICATIONS
The SCIENT’X product range delivers clinical solutions for spinal surgeons. The range encompasses products that can be used in all spinal pathologies including degenerative conditions of the lumbar and cervical spines, deformity and tumour and trauma indications.

SEMI-RIGID PEDICLE SCREW SYSTEMS
The SCIENT’X range of dynamic semi-rigid pedicle screw systems offers the following key benefits: -

ISOLOCK® – A RIGID AND SEMI-RIGID PLATE SYSTEM
The products that delivers SCIENT’X semi-rigid technology includes Isolock® a rigid and semi-rigid plate system. Isolock® has been available for over a decade and is the pioneering product in the field of dynamic stabilisation. As a parallel development to the plate based Isolock® is the Isobar® TTL.

This versatile system utilises rods rather than plates and has a wide range of indications in additions to it’s application, like Isolock®, in lumbar spinal disorders.

Both the Isolock® and Isobar®TTL systems utilise pedicle screws for secure fixation.

In the case of Isobar®TTL both monoaxial and polyaxial pedicle screws are available. The latest addition to the range of dynamic semi-rigid systems from SCIENT’X is the unique Aladyn™ dynamic semi-rigid plate. This system uniquely offers a polyaxial screw that is compatible with a plate.

Aladyn™ like Isobar® is indicated for disorders of the lumbar spine. The Isobar® TTL system is versatile and apart from it’s use as a low back system is equally suited for use in the thoraco-lumbar spine in tumour/trauma and deformity.

PEEK – SPINAL IMPLANT MATERIAL
PEEK is spinal implant, which is radiolucent so the progress of the fusion mass can be monitored post-operatively. Its modulus of elasticity is close to natural bone, so that a cage made from PEEK is load sharing not load bearing. This feature optimises the fusion rate. Pure PEEK is not reinforced with carbon-fibres thus avoids the possibility of inflammatory tissues reactions caused by carbon-fibre debris.

The company offers a range of PLIF cages manufactured from pure PEEK. These include, the CO Cage, the CC Cage and the latest development the Adonys™ Cage.

PCB – CERVICAL PLATE/CAGE COMBINATION
The PCB, cervical plate/cage combination, is manufactured from titanium alloy and is a combined cervical cage and integral anterior plate. The cage has a large space to incorporate graft material and the attached plate can be customised intra-operatively to conform to the anterior surfaces of the vertebral bodies.

SCIENT’X also manufactures the PACH anterior lumbar sacral plate and the EASYS™ Cross Connector, for use with titanium thoraco-lumbar rod based systems, rod diameters of 4.5mm to 6.5mm.

THE SOLUTION FOR VERTEBRAL COMPRESSION FRACTURES
CERAMENT is a biphasic material composed of calcium sulfate and hydroxyapatite mixed with the radio contrast agent, iohexol.

CERAMENT’s wide range of clinical benefits make it the ideal solution for treating vertebral compression fractures. CERAMENT is also perfect for use as bone filler.

NATURALLY CONTROLLED BONE INGROWTH
With CERAMENT, the calcium sulfate component is gradually resorbed leaving space for bone ingrowth while the more permanent, osteoconductive hydroxyapatite component armors the damaged bone.

INJECTABLE CERAMIC BONE SUBSTITUTE
CERAMENT SPINE SUPPORT is an injectable ceramic bone substitute intended for use in osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. After immediate curing (less than one hour) in the fractured osteoporotic vertebra, CERAMENT SPINE SUPPORT stabilizes the vertebral body, providing immediate pain relief and allowing fractures to heal.

The procedure is minimally invasive and can be administered in an outpatient setting.

BONE-VOID FILLER FOR ORTHOPEDIC APPLICATIONS
CERAMENT BONE-VOID FILLER is intended only for orthopedic applications as filler for gaps and voids that are not intrinsic to the stability of the bony structure. It is indicated to be injected into bony voids or gaps in the skeletal system, spine, and pelvis. These defects may be surgically created osseous defects or osseous defects from traumatic injury to the bone.

SMOOTH, HOMOGENEOUS CONSISTENCY

CERAMENT SPINE SUPPORT and CERAMENT BONE-VOID FILLER are precisely measured for exact dosages and guaranteed to be sterile. Prior to injection, iohexol, the radio contrast agent, is added to CERAMENT CMI, the combined mixing and injection device, where it is mixed to a smooth, homogeneous consistency. The material flows well and is easily injected into bone through the injection device, even when very narrow needles are used.

CERAMENT SPINE SUPPORT is not available for sale; it is for investigational use only. CERAMENT BONE VOID FILLER has FDA 510(k) clearance. European approvals are pending.
