Company Profile

Quanser Consulting Inc.

Quanser is much more than a consulting company. We are an innovative partner and dedicated collaborator, with a strong track record of successful commercialization and manufacturing. At Quanser, client support commences from the instant you make initial contact and it extends throughout our relationship. If you are seeking an integrated approach, you just won’t find anyone else in the industry with our level of dedication to client service, product design and performance.

Founder and CTO
With a lifetime of experience in teaching, research and design, Dr. Jacob Apkarian is still as closely linked to the inspirational engineering development at Quanser as he ever was. Back in 1989, Jacob started the business to provide exciting challenges for undergraduate students of feedback control, and provide researchers with effective tools and techniques to advance developments in the field. Today, he continues to instill his enthusiasm for innovation in all of Quanser’s engineers, clients and partners.

Jacob’s driving force has always been to provide clients with innovative solutions that directly impact their progress. This allows our clients to free up valuable time and resources and focus on their particular area of expertise. Understanding our customer’s needs, in detail, has always played a prominent role in Jacob’s thinking, and the team at Quanser has grown successfully by applying this philosophy to all projects.

Over the last two decades, Quanser has grown to become a leading force in the field of advanced Mechatronics, with first-class engineers filling our design roles. Our R&D team includes experienced Mechanical, Electronic, Electro-Mechanical, Software and Control specialists – all of whom are tightly integrated with each other to ensure a comprehensive approach to each project that we undertake.

During Quanser’s early years, many design concepts were developed and refined through close personal relationships between Jacob and leading researchers around the world. Together, they had the passion to get the ‘right’ results despite meagre budgets. Many of these developments led to breakthrough concepts in the field of real-time control research and education. Today, this pioneering spirit remains at the core of the team Quanser has built – all of our engineers are fanatical advocates for our client’s needs because they recognize this is the key to success.

Our design and development expertise has now evolved into a world-class offering, taking advantage of the investment made over the years to develop our manufacturing resources.

Quanser is a respected world leader in the field of Mechatronics and Real-Time Control, with representation in more than 30 countries. Quanser’s growing organizational structure includes Paul Gilbert, CEO since 2002, working alongside Jacob to manage the ever-expanding demands of the market. At the same time, Quanser is committed to the spirit of innovation and collaboration that our customers have come to know and expect, so we never stop investing in new, cutting-edge technology.

Building upon the legacy of WinCon, the first ever real-time software to run Simulink-generated code under Windows back in 1994, Quanser now offers QuaRC, a rapid controls development software suite to fit your teaching and development applications. Fully compatible and integrated with Simulink and Real Time Workshop, QuaRC allows you to draw your controller, generate code and run it … all without a DSP or without writing a single line of code! QuaRC runs under Windows XP or Vista and can target either the PC it is running on, or a remote PC running either Windows or the QNX RTOS. For small footprint embedded applications consider QuaRC for QNX. QuaRC also offers a new licensing model, with network licenses as well as demo licenses available.

SCIENT’X – Semi-Rigid Pedicle Screw Systems
SCIENT’X is an independent company at the cutting edge of spinal technology. Established in 1989 as a focused research and development based spinal organisation, SCIENT’X's position as a leading supplier of spinal technology is based on its leadership in the field of dynamic semi-rigid pedicle screw systems and it’s use of pure PEEK (Poly-ether-ether-ketone) as a spinal implant material. SCIENT’X has the claim to being the first spinal company to offer pure PEEK as a material for interbody fusion cages.

RESEARCH LED CLINICAL SOLUTIONS – INNOVATIVE SPINAL DEVICES
SCIENT’X offers a comprehensive range of innovative spinal devices. The products have been designed and developed through our close cooperation with leading spinal surgeons. Indeed our product portfolio has been built up through our business philosophy of “Research Led Clinical Solutions.” It is of paramount importance to the company that we provide products with a genuine clinical need.

The product range is continuously being refined and updated. We also have a continuous process of upgrading existing products. This is very clear to appreciate with our range of interbody fusion devices, which are now all available sterile packed. Sterile packed spinal products are very much the future and offers major benefits regarding product integrity and traceability.

LUMBAR AND CERVICAL SPINES, DEFORMITY AND TUMOUR AND TRAUMA INDICATIONS
The SCIENT’X product range delivers clinical solutions for spinal surgeons. The range encompasses products that can be used in all spinal pathologies including degenerative conditions of the lumbar and cervical spines, deformity and tumour and trauma indications.

SEMI-RIGID PEDICLE SCREW SYSTEMS
The SCIENT’X range of dynamic semi-rigid pedicle screw systems offers the following key benefits: -

Prevention of adjacent segment degeneration
Reduction of implant breakage
Improved quality of the interbody fusion
Potential use as a non-fusion device
ISOLOCK® – A RIGID AND SEMI-RIGID PLATE SYSTEM
The products that delivers SCIENT’X semi-rigid technology includes Isolock® a rigid and semi-rigid plate system. Isolock® has been available for over a decade and is the pioneering product in the field of dynamic stabilisation. As a parallel development to the plate based Isolock® is the Isobar® TTL.

This versatile system utilises rods rather than plates and has a wide range of indications in additions to it’s application, like Isolock®, in lumbar spinal disorders.

Both the Isolock® and Isobar®TTL systems utilise pedicle screws for secure fixation.

In the case of Isobar®TTL both monoaxial and polyaxial pedicle screws are available. The latest addition to the range of dynamic semi-rigid systems from SCIENT’X is the unique Aladyn™ dynamic semi-rigid plate. This system uniquely offers a polyaxial screw that is compatible with a plate.

Aladyn™ like Isobar® is indicated for disorders of the lumbar spine. The Isobar® TTL system is versatile and apart from it’s use as a low back system is equally suited for use in the thoraco-lumbar spine in tumour/trauma and deformity.

PEEK – SPINAL IMPLANT MATERIAL
PEEK is spinal implant, which is radiolucent so the progress of the fusion mass can be monitored post-operatively. Its modulus of elasticity is close to natural bone, so that a cage made from PEEK is load sharing not load bearing. This feature optimises the fusion rate. Pure PEEK is not reinforced with carbon-fibres thus avoids the possibility of inflammatory tissues reactions caused by carbon-fibre debris.

The company offers a range of PLIF cages manufactured from pure PEEK. These include, the CO Cage, the CC Cage and the latest development the Adonys™ Cage.

PCB – CERVICAL PLATE/CAGE COMBINATION
The PCB, cervical plate/cage combination, is manufactured from titanium alloy and is a combined cervical cage and integral anterior plate. The cage has a large space to incorporate graft material and the attached plate can be customised intra-operatively to conform to the anterior surfaces of the vertebral bodies.

SCIENT’X also manufactures the PACH anterior lumbar sacral plate and the EASYS™ Cross Connector, for use with titanium thoraco-lumbar rod based systems, rod diameters of 4.5mm to 6.5mm.

BONESUPPORT – Solutions for Ceramic Vertebral Augmentation and Bone Void Fillers
BONESUPPORT™ is a Swedish medical technology company that has developed CERAMENT™ – a unique, injectable, bone-like material based on biocompatible, synthetic ceramics. CERAMENT is ideal for use in a wide range of clinical applications and has been developed to bring people with bone and joint diseases, such as osteoporosis, back to an active life.

To date, two products have been developed on the Cerament platform – CERAMENT SPINE SUPPORT and CERAMENT BONE-VOID FILLER. Ideas for new products and applications are constantly being developed.

THE SOLUTION FOR VERTEBRAL COMPRESSION FRACTURES
CERAMENT is a biphasic material composed of calcium sulfate and hydroxyapatite mixed with the radio contrast agent, iohexol.

CERAMENT’s wide range of clinical benefits make it the ideal solution for treating vertebral compression fractures. CERAMENT is also perfect for use as bone filler.

NATURALLY CONTROLLED BONE INGROWTH
With CERAMENT, the calcium sulfate component is gradually resorbed leaving space for bone ingrowth while the more permanent, osteoconductive hydroxyapatite component armors the damaged bone.

CERAMENT’s other features include:

Osteoconductive – bone healing in voids is enhanced
Ideal compressive strength similar to that of cancellous bone
Excellent injectability and moldability – access to any site of the skeleton is quick and simple
High penetrability – bone is uniformly reinforced and held in position for future bone ingrowth
Non-exothermic – biocompatible setting temperature
Radiopaque – easily traced in fluoroscopic images
Fully biocompatible
Non-toxic – safe handling and no toxic or unpleasant fumes
High purity and reproducibility
INJECTABLE CERAMIC BONE SUBSTITUTE
CERAMENT SPINE SUPPORT is an injectable ceramic bone substitute intended for use in osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. After immediate curing (less than one hour) in the fractured osteoporotic vertebra, CERAMENT SPINE SUPPORT stabilizes the vertebral body, providing immediate pain relief and allowing fractures to heal.

The procedure is minimally invasive and can be administered in an outpatient setting.

BONE-VOID FILLER FOR ORTHOPEDIC APPLICATIONS
CERAMENT BONE-VOID FILLER is intended only for orthopedic applications as filler for gaps and voids that are not intrinsic to the stability of the bony structure. It is indicated to be injected into bony voids or gaps in the skeletal system, spine, and pelvis. These defects may be surgically created osseous defects or osseous defects from traumatic injury to the bone.

SMOOTH, HOMOGENEOUS CONSISTENCY

CERAMENT SPINE SUPPORT and CERAMENT BONE-VOID FILLER are precisely measured for exact dosages and guaranteed to be sterile. Prior to injection, iohexol, the radio contrast agent, is added to CERAMENT CMI, the combined mixing and injection device, where it is mixed to a smooth, homogeneous consistency. The material flows well and is easily injected into bone through the injection device, even when very narrow needles are used.

CERAMENT SPINE SUPPORT is not available for sale; it is for investigational use only. CERAMENT BONE VOID FILLER has FDA 510(k) clearance. European approvals are pending.
